SanDisk® Unveils World’s First microSD Card Designed to Deliver a New Dimension of Mobile Application Performance

The 256GB SanDisk Ultra® microSD card with the Latest A1 SD Specification Offers Mobile Users Even More Storage Expansion Options

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 5, 2017 – Western Digital Corporation (NASDAQ: WDC), a global storage technology and solutions leader, today unveiled the world’s first microSDTM card that meets the Application Performance Class 1 (A1) requirements from the latest SD Association’s SD 5.1 specifications. By meeting the A1 performance standard, the 256GB SanDisk Ultra® microSDXCTM UHS-I card, Premium Edition, delivers capacity, speed and enhanced capability to deliver a better smartphone experience1.

Since the popular memory card format launched more than a decade ago, microSD cards have been instrumental in driving new segments in digital imaging like action cameras, drones, dashboard cameras and surveillance systems, and have significantly impacted the evolution of the smartphone. Today, approximately 75 percent of smartphone models on the market contain microSD slots, according to data from Strategy Analytics2. The 256GB* SanDisk Ultra microSD card offers the capacity and performance consumers need to capture all of life’s moments without having to worry about what to delete. The card can hold up to 24 hours of Full HD video3 and with premium transfer speeds of up to 95MB/s**. With A1 performance, the card can launch and run apps at blazing speeds.

“The microSD card has been an integral part of the digital revolution by providing more options for high performance, high capacity storage for smartphones,” said Dinesh Bahal, vice president of product management, Client Solutions Business Unit, Western Digital. “SanDisk® cards are at the centre of more than two billion consumer devices, and now with this A1 card, we’re proud to play a significant role in continuing to advance the trusted format.”

Long used by billions to expand capacity for photos, videos, music and many other digital files, the, microSD card now must evolve to support application-intensive environments, paving the way for a new dimension of memory card performance. With the introduction of the Android Marshmallow 6 operating system, users can expand storage capacity on smartphones by selecting the microSD card as preferred or adoptable storage, which means apps can now be loaded and launched directly from the A1 microSD card.

The A1 spec allows the new card to manage random read input-output access per second (IOPS) of 1,500 and write IOPS of 500, so it can quickly open apps and process accompanying tasks, such as audio, graphics, saved profiles and in-app permissions. With this in mind, the new SanDisk Ultra microSD card with A1 is designed to provide consumers a faster, more powerful app experience using cards.

“SD technology is trusted by consumers around the world for its reliable, backwards compatible and highly interoperable storage, making it the world’s leading memory format with billions of SD memory cards and devices in the market,” said Brian Kumagai, SDA president. “The A1 specification will help consumers identify the appropriate card to ensure an optimal experience when running and launching apps on their smartphone. We are pleased that SanDisk will release an A1 card, and continues to contribute to breakthrough technologies enabled by the microSD format.”

The new SanDisk Ultra microSD card with A1 is compatible with the SanDisk® Memory Zone app for Android™, giving users an easy way to manage and back up content on their device. The app is available for free through the Google Play™ Store4. The card will be available worldwide in January 2017 with a UK MSRP of £166.99.

The complete line of SanDisk® microSD cards can be purchased at more than 300,000 retailers worldwide.

Philips PowerSensor Displays from MMD

Easy on the eyes, easy on the planet:
eco-friendly productivity with new Philips PowerSensor Displays

  • 16:10 aspect ratio for less scrolling when working with applications
  • Sustainable eco-design with Power Sensor saves up to 80% energy costs
  • LowBlue Mode for eye-friendly productivity
  • IPS technology for full colours and wide viewing angle

Amsterdam, 8 December 2016 – MMD, the leading technology company and brand license partner for Philips Monitors, announces two new 24-inch LCD displays that work for the health of users as well as the planet. Packed with eco and user-friendly design features, these displays include an integrated PowerSensor to turn power off when no one is at the desk; and a special LowBlue mode to cut the amount of blue light exposure for the eyes. Combined with the colour performance and wide viewing angles of IPS technology, the 16:10 aspect ratio as well as advanced connectivity with USB 3.0, they are displays to improve productivity in any modern office.

Wellbeing at work
Commenting on the user-friendly productivity of the new displays, Artem Khomenko, Product Manager Philips monitors Europe at MMD says, “At home and at work, people routinely log many hours of screen time every day. These displays are part of our ongoing commitment to developing innovative products that keep people working productively and healthily even when hours are long.”

Keeping eyes fresh and healthy is key to better wellbeing at work. However, excessive exposure to the blue light of displays can potentially harm vision. The LowBlue mode in the new 240B7QPJEB/240B7QPTEB LCD displays counters this impact. Developed to enhance wellbeing, LowBlue mode uses a smart software technology to reduce the shortwave blue light. LowBlue mode is complemented by Philips Flicker-free technology, a solution to regulate brightness and reduce flicker for more comfortable viewing. The displays also feature the SmartErgoBase, which users can tilt, swivel and height-adjust to their personal preference for a more comfortable viewing experience. As a useful side benefit, the base also keeps cables neat and tidy.

Displays with eco credentials
These new Philips Monitors displays were developed with eco-friendly productivity in mind. They are made from 85% post-consumer recycled plastics with TCO Edge, minimising the environmental impact of production. In operation, they save energy highly effectively through the PowerSensor, an integrated “people sensor” that transmits and receives harmless infrared signals to determine if a user is present, and automatically reduces monitor brightness whenever the user moves away. This cuts the energy bill by up to 80% and prolongs the monitor life.

Brilliant display performance
Eco credentials apart, the new displays also deliver where it matters most: on brilliant viewing quality. Advanced IPS technology creates extra-wide viewing angles of 178/178 degrees for viewing from almost any angle – even nearly side-on. No matter if users work with big charts or multiple-page documents – thanks to the 16:10 aspect ratio, the 240B7QPJEB/240B7QPTEB are perfect for all kinds of office applications as they offer more space. Users will also appreciate the sharp images and vivid colours that demand consistent colour accuracy and brightness. The ultra-narrow screen border reduces distraction and makes the displays ideal for multi-screen or tiled setups. The displays of course also deliver the same quality viewing to photos and movies.

Professional connectivity
Responding to the need to connect efficiently to a whole range of data sources, these new displays are equipped with VGA, DisplayPort and universal HDMI. And for super-fast transfer, they also feature Super Speed USB 3.0, enabling data to be sent at a blazing 5.0 gbit per second (around 10 times the speed of USB 2.0). The USB interface is backward-compatible, so users can continue to source data from their USB 2.0 devices.
The new Philips 240B7QPJEB/240B7QPTEB LCD displays are available now for an RRP of £289.00/£299.00 respectively.

ADATA releases updated SC660H and SV620H 3D NAND external SSDs

Fast and reliable storage expansion in two stylish designs

UK – December 8, 2016 – ADATA Technology, a leading manufacturer of high performance DRAM modules, NAND Flash products, and mobile accessories today launched the updated Premier SC660H and Premier SV620H external SSDs. Based on previous designs, the new models are part of the ADATA move to 3D NAND Flash in all new SSDs and in refreshes of existing models. The SC660H and SV620H feature 3D TLC NAND instead of traditional 2D NAND to provide increased reliability, durability, and efficiency. The drives connect to host PCs via USB 3.1 Gen 1, and are presented in two distinct enclosure styles. Thanks to 3D NAND, the updated SSDs are available in 256GB and 512GB as opposed to 240GB and 480GB in the original SC660/SV620. Performance is 440MB/s read and 430MB/s write in both models.

SC660H: ultra-thin and tough elegance

The SC660H measures just 9.6mm tall. Its slim enclosure uses electroplated and textured titanium, ensuring a high degree of resistance against shocks, scratches, paint chipping, and fingerprints. The SC660H weighs a mere 73g, a fraction of the bulk of an external mechanical hard drive.

SV620H: elevating external SSD design

Also light and slender, the SV620H likewise employs a sandblasted titanium enclosure that makes it shock and scratch resistant. Its flat surfaces are raised 0.75mm, so that even when moved across a desk or other area the risk of unsightly scratches is minimised. The SV620H weighs 76g, and like its SC660H sibling has a cool blue activity LED.

Bigger capacity in the same space plus added reliability

The 3D TLC NAND used on the two external SSDs is more reliable than 2D NAND and enables “packing” more storage into identical product chassis. At 256GB and 512GB, the SC660H and SV620H offer more space than their predecessors without consuming extra power. They are extremely efficient and ideal for notebook PCs thanks to placing very little stress on batteries. Like all SSDs, they run totally silent and cool. With their 3D NAND, the SC660H and SV620H simply offer a better value than 2D NAND-based external SSDs, representing another step in ADATA embracing new technology to benefit consumers worldwide.

3 Legged Thing idea to product insight

From Concept To Corey – A Product Journey

Three legged thing Corey

British Tripod Brand, 3 Legged Thing, famous for their innovation and quirky designs are offering an unprecedented opportunity to gain a unique insight into their production process of their latest launch – Punks Corey

#ConceptToCorey is a new project which documents the journey; from the very doodles of an idea, through to engineering CADs, photo-realisitic renders, prototyping and testing. It’s all here, laid bare for photographers and voyeurs of ‘how stuff works’  to get a handle on what goes into bringing a 3LT tripod to market.

The project will be chartered across Twitter and Instagram. “We have an incredible level of engagement across the regular social media platforms – those photographers who’ve used our tripods or just love our branding and style, feel that they have a direct way to communicate with us. We wanted to be able to share with them an interesting insight into how we bring our products to market.” commented 3LT’s Global Marketing Manager, Dan Crawford.

“It doesn’t even end at product launch” comments 3LT Founder and CEO, Danny Lenihan. “We quite often make small design adjustments and adaptations once we receive consumer feedback, after the launch. We want to be able to produce the best products we can, and who better to provide the inspiration for change than the many thousands of customers we have dotted around the world?”

The project is to end on Christmas Day. 3 Legged Thing promise to show some of the intricate details of the design work, and follow the critical path from Concept to Corey.
